Stargate Genesis - Interview with Robert Richardson

Seems Stargate virtual series' keep poping up all over the place now. Some stay and actually make their way to a premier (ala Stargate Destiny) and others get cancelled, like Hyperion and Atlas. But here is one, on it's way to being released, and not only that, it is one of the most interesting and different Stargate stories so far.

I sat down to talk to Robert Richardson, creator and producer for Stargate Genesis:

Elite Anubis Guard- Hi, thanks for agreeing to this interview. Could you tell me a little about yourself, e.g. hobbies and etc?

Robert Richardson- well im a 16 year old guy from Norwich, England. I go to
school, studying ICT, philosophy and ethic, business and environmental science. My main hobbies at the moment are SG:G, SG in general and just watching TV. I also enjoy rock/ punk music and just being a regular teenager.

Elite Anubis Guard- For those of us who have never heard of Stargate Genesis, what can you tell us about the story?

Robert Richardson- Stargate: Genesis is a partnership between myself (immhotep, to most of you) and Brian pope AKA the_pope. The series is set millennia in the past, When the great alliance of the 4 great race of the age, ruled (the four great races then did not include the Asgard as we know them however). Stargate genesis is set aboard the Arc. The arc was built by the alliance as a last endeavour to combat the great plague, the plan was to recreate the galaxy as it was before the plague came, destroying any evidence of its affect on the galaxy for the next evolution of being to come after them. The purpose and mission of the Arc it to collect information on and record the galaxy before the plague. This is the team’s mission.

Elite Anubis Guard- What about you? What is your role in the series?

Robert Richardson- My role, I’m the glue! Basically im the creator of the series, I come up with the major series arcs, the episodes as well as the general feel. Setting and background to the show. The writing team do the hard work which is turning my ideas and the concept in to a living, breathing universe that is actually really fulfilling for me to read.

Elite Anubis Guard- Genesis is an interesting and unique series, how did the idea behind the series come about?

Robert Richardson- the idea came about by a thread I created on the Gateworld Forum, many of you may remember the 'is the arc and ancient ship thread' a while back. It has all grown from pope’s participation in that thread.

Elite Anubis Guard- Considering how unique the series is how do you go about developing the episodes, making sure they don't conflict with anything in SG1 or Atlantis?

Robert Richardson- Well apart of Daniel Jackson being in two different time frames at the same time, then I see no reason for the three series to conflict.

Elite Anubis Guard- Why did you decide to use biblical ideas and references. Wheren't you disuaded by even TPTB's reluctance to touch christiany?

Robert Richardson- No the root concept of the idea was based upon the idea that Christians used the teachings and history of the bible (within a stargate context of course) to write the first chapters of the bible, the history of the galaxy was passed on through survivor's of the Genesis series, to become the actually biblical Genesis story. This is co-incidentally why we chose the name "Genesis", apart from the 'beginning and first chapter imagery it imposes'.
This series is in no way, against Christianity and 'god' it just explains why the
people of earth used these historic (in SG term) as a reference for a religion
Based around a worship of 'god'.

The Arc being a device which protects the good beings from a flood of the planet. Being transformed in to a series about a ship that records life from a plague sweeping the galaxy does not suggest falseness in the bible, it just suggests that the bible was written in a way an individual planet rather than a galaxy could interpret the past event leading up to itself.

Elite Anubis Guard- Can you tell us anything about the pilot? Titles, plot details?

Robert Richardson- The pilot is called Dawn. The pilot starts with the opening of a new facility on earth at the Antarctic and the testing of a new weapon system for our ships (by a ship equipped with the weapons) upon the debris field of Anubis’s fleet. During this testing the weapons hit the arc, a recent addition to earth orbital pathways, in that it has only been in orbit since the events of 'Threads' and the destruction of dakara, it partner device. Once the Arc is discovered the testing crew of the new vessel (the Athena) is beamed aboard (while the ship is reviewed) and from then on the rest is history...pardon the pun

Elite Anubis Guard- The characters of Genesis, what can you tell the readers about them?

Robert Richardson- Our website is now featuring full info on all the major characters of the arc. I will give on piece of information however; Lt. Col. Samantha carter will be with us for the first 2 and a bit episodes...this may concern some but she has a purpose in the grand scheme of things that we won’t reveal, and it may take along while for her to be a part of the series again (she will not be in series 1).

Elite Anubis Guard- Why did you decide to use Dr Jackson? Aren't you worried about continuity problems that may arise during the development of SG1, like he gets killed again?

Robert Richardson- it was a concern but the series has the need for Daniel to be directly involved. Continuity? Yes that could be an issue but at the moment this could potentially be set at any point in the near future the war with the orii or any new enemy is not mentioned. It is simply a test of a new battle cruiser with a new weapon, something that could occur at any point form this point forward (potentially). For now however Daniel Jackson is with SG: G is the depth of his own past...and let’s all not forget that if he does not succeed if he ever gets to return home, it may not be the home he left. Essentially continuity may be an issue however from the moment Daniel left on the arc he was presumed dead, and Earth’s/Sg1 action would be altered by the very past he was playing with...SG1's story and SG: G’s story may conflict.
In addition to Dr Jackson many of you will now be aware from reading this
interview that Colonel Carter is part of the series; I say part of because she does not have a major role for along time, it is only in time that she will become important.

The continuity issue may be of concern but they are not for us, for the moment, we are using the premise that as soon as they step on the arc Dr. Jackson and carter are MIA in SG1 and SGA, when they go MIA is a different issue for the show can be set within any period of the show present or future. In addition to this the future may be adversely affected by the arc action in such a way that the current series and the SG1 team may not even come in to passing. Therefore avoiding continuity issues altogether, think of it as a moebius effect but without wanting to change the past.

Elite Anubis Guard- What can you tell me about the people currently working with you to make this series?

Robert Richardson- There are currently three writers, and we are welcome to people if they want to join. Arctic-goddess AKA Patrica Stewart, The pope AKA Brian Pope and Captain pash AKA Harry Martin.

Elite Anubis Guard- What can we expect from Season One?

Robert Richardson- some major story arcs, some cool technology and race beyond what the current series’ of SG/1/A has offered us and in many ways a whole new way of looking at the foundations to SG itself.

Elite Anubis Guard- Release date? That's what everyone’s asking?

Robert Richardson- April 06, that the date we are working towards.

Elite Anubis Guard- Thank you for agreeing to this interview. Do you have any last words?

Robert Richardson- I have two...keep watching :)
